About Tendo-ryu
Tendo-ryu is a martial art school with a rich history spanning over 450 years.
While the school incorporates an impressive array of weapons, its techniques involving the naginata are what make it truly unique. Scrolls from the Meiji period (1868-1912) contain references to hundreds of techniques, passed down from master to disciple.
The technique known as “ichimonji-no midare” has been passed down through the generations and remains the most basic technique in the tradition. Based on the combat experience of the school’s founder, Saito Hankan Denkibo (1550-87), it represents the very essence of Tendo-ryu’s teachings. Today, Kimura Yasuko, the 17th head of the school, is committed to preserving and promoting the school for future generations.
